ABOUT THE ARTIST

Melbourne-based artist Gail could pretty much paint anything, but let’s be real, her cats have unionised and demanded full artistic representation. Gail is a contemporary abstract painter driven by a single, purposeful mission: to capture the unstoppable effervescence of spirit and inject pure, unadulterated joy into people's lives.

Her creative process is dictated by her subjects. Rather than imposing her own will, Gail lets the personalities of her painted characters shape the brushstrokes, relying on loose, painterly movements to create energy. This intuitive, reality-blurring collaboration was fostered early on by her painter father and later refined through a BA in Theatre Design and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Filmmaking. After a long, soul-crushing detour into the non-artistic world, Gail stepped back into her true creative purpose, embracing the words of Andy Warhol: “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.”

Today, Gail paints both bold, non-feline abstracts and character-driven cat portraits. These aren't your everyday, aloof house cats who leave you a dead mouse to cover their rent; these are felines with enough personality to start their own sitcom. While a sweeping abstract and a vibrant cat portrait might look different at first glance, they share the exact same DNA: a persistent warmth designed to make viewers smile, remember their wondrous curiosity, and celebrate the absurd side of life.
